Simply The Best Silk Pillow Cases

Nobody likes to buy something that is a bad deal.  And when it comes to silk pillow cases, unfortunately, there are a lot of bad deals out there.  From pillowcases sewn together with inferior materials to ones that use silk that feels less than silky, to manufacturers who inflate their stated thread count just to grab an extra sale or two, there are lots of pitfalls that need to be avoided.  As our name states, we hope you can find The Best Silk Pillow Cases around and enjoy the great sleep that comes when sleeping on silk.  So we are going to give you some advice at finding simply the best silk pillow cases.

First of all, what is meant by the best?  Unfortunately, the best is a relative term.  Someone who has years of experience buying and sleeping on and enjoying silk bedding may have a different idea of someone who is buying their first set of silk pillow cases.  Someone with deep pockets and an unlimited amount of money to spend will have more options when it comes to buying than a family trying to put a little bit of luxury in their life.  So as you read this article, keep in mind that fact that “best” is relative and what may be best for you may not be best for someone else.  We will work hard to keep that in mind as well.

When searching for silk pillow cases, several things come into play; the type of silk, the thread count, the momme weight, the manufacturing process, to some extent where it is made, and ultimately, the feel.  The feel of a silk pillowcase is what makes the whole search worthwhile.  If it doesn’t feel like you want it to, there is no point in buying it.

Probably the first thing you will need to be aware of on your hunt is the kind of silk being used.  While most silk pillow cases are made using charmeuse or mulberry , other kinds exist that will feel rather different.  Manufacturers may not clearly state what kind of silk they are using either by oversight or by design.  If the pillow cases you are looking at buying say they are charmeuse silk or mulberry silk, then rest at ease – they are what you are looking for.  However, if they say they are habotai, raw silk, tussah, Assam or something else, don’t believe the salesperson’s word as gospel.  Either take a step back to research the internet about that kind of silk or make sure the store has a very forgiving return policy – what you may be getting ready to buy just may not be what you really want.

Few manufacturers will talk much about the kind of thread they use to put silk pillow cases together with.  In truth, although it does matter, it really doesn’t simply because not enough manufacturers state this part of the process and there is more than one option that works out well.  Don’t spend too much time worrying about the thread used to sew the pieces together, but do take some time to check out the design. There are zippered styles, open sack styles, and hidden flap styles of pillow cases.  Most silk pillow cases will be the open sack or the hidden flap style.  Few will utilize a zipper, which is a good thing.  Hidden flap styles are probably the best as they utilize a flap that will help hold the pillow in place.  Open sack styles are the most common and the easiest to find, even if they are not as helpful as the hidden flap style.

Thread count and momme weight are two areas that are dealt with in more depth in other articles on this website.  In short, don’t worry about momme weight.  If it is listed and it is somewhere between 16 and 19, you’re good to go.  If it is not listed, don’t bother asking about it because it will most likely be 16-19.  If it is more or less than this, you might want to look elsewhere.  As far as thread count – 400 or 500 are good numbers to remember.  Higher thread counts are unnecessary and may not be accurate.

Where the silk is made will have an effect on the feel of it, although it should be minor.  Thai silk is often handmade and as such will have a different feel than the classic, Western concept of “silk.”  Not to say that it is bad, just that it is often different.  Many forms of silk are made in India and they also have their own unique style resulting in unique silk pillow cases.

Ultimately, the best silk pillow cases are the ones that you fall in love with.  When shopping, keep in mind thread count, momme weight, method of construction and the materials used in the construction of the pillow cases as well as where it is made.  However, the ultimate test is how the silk pillow cases feel.  If you touch them and they are exactly what you were thinking of – buy them.  You will have found simply the best silk pillow cases.
